Goyo (1880-1921) who studied both Japanese and Western style painting was foremost among the neo-ukiyo-e artists. His passion for traditional ukiyo-e led him to a scholarly career of research and publication on the subject. His most productive years were spent recreating master works of his forebears with the last six years engaged in studies of women in a modern adaptation of the traditional technique. In his formative years, he undertook projects of the traditional technique. In his formative years, he undertook projects of heroic scale including recreation of the famed Tokaido Gojusan-tsugi no Uchi (53 stations of the Tokaido) first done by Ando Hiroshige in 1833-34. That series was to establish Hiroshige as the foremost artist of his time and bring him about a wave of appreciation for landscape subjects. The artists love of his subject is evident in the work and Goyo's love of the artist and art equally well demonstrated in his recreation of the master work.
